We arrived at Dounne castle, close to Dunblane, to find hordes of tourists emptying out of a coach for the 'Outlander' experience. A little confused we wandered around the castle ruin and discovered more about this TV series. Fortunately the tourist group soon departed for yet another destination and we were able to wander around in peace. This castle becomes the home of the Mackenzie clan in the 1740's in the TV drama.

The story begins in the town of Falkland ( in real life) although it's not called that in the programme. A young couple, enjoying a second honeymoon straight after the Second World War, are suddenly separated by a shift in time. The wife is flung back 202 years to the times of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the troubles with the British. The rich Scottish scenery is a perfect back drop for this series. The town of Culross also features heavily being used as village scenes for the close by castle. We had wandered around the magnificent Palace of Culross ( National Trust ) only to see interiors being used in the programme. The wooden vaulted ceiling was very atmospheric.
